Nobody will say no to a day with the newest model of McLaren. Definitely not when you’ve already driven the 12C Coupé. McLaren says that the 650S is a big improvement of the 12C. The 650S is a big success and they even ended the production of the 12C. McLaren is doing great and they do everything they can to bring their car to the attention. The 12C was a great car but still needed some improvements, the P1 is the ultimate hypercar which seems to be faster than every competitor and with this knowledge McLaren developed the 650S.
McLaren looked closely into the points of improvement of the 12C and they went working on it. Think of the electronic suspension, the sound and the active aerodynamics. The 650S is a car which transforms pure power into a gigantic speed. The 650S sprints to 200 kph in 8.4 seconds and the only thing the driver has to do is floor the pedal. The 12C had a great handling but the 650S is even better. The 650S creates forty percent more downforce than the 12C and you can really feel this in corners and at high speeds. McLaren produced this extra downforce by improving the active aerodynamics and adjusting the front with the enormous air intake. Next to faster, the 650S is also more accessible. The 12C already felt like driving in a normal car, which is a big advantage. You don’t want to work very hard to drive the car through the city center. Cruising around in the 650S isn’t a problem at all and the seven speed gearbox and all the safety systems do all the work for you.
Until you activate the buttons on the center console you won’t know what it feels like to meet the violence the 650 hp strong V8 biturbo can produce! 650 hp and 678 Nm of torque made us sprint to 100 kph within 3.0 seconds. We haven’t tested the sprint to 200 kph because this car is just insanely fast. That’s what makes it so much fun to drive this car. The speed of the 650S is crazy and the car might not have the same emotion as a Ferrari or Lamborghini, but the McLaren definitely is the better car. The only worthy competitor might be the Lamborghini Huracán LP610-4, but that car probably won’t be as comfortable as the 650S. Thanks to the amazing suspension and drive train the 650S drives you around in all comfort. It won’t feel like a Mercedes-Benz S-Class, but it’s more comfortable than the average sports car. The steering is very direct, just like it’s supposed to! There’s no corner that will cause a problem for this car and when you’re driving just too fast the great stability system will easily correct you.
Not much is changed in the interior. IRIS Navigation with Bluetooth telephony, DAB digital radio, audio streaming and voice control are standard and the interior is finished with alcantara. Next to that, it’s possible to order the seats in different sizes, you can choose between S, M and L. This way McLaren wants to offer you more comfort. When you buy a second-hand copy you can always order new seats at your McLaren dealership. The price of the McLaren 650S Coupé in the Netherlands starts at € 289.500,-, while the Spider is available for a price of € 313.750,-. All prices are including taxes. Like we already said, the 650S is the sophisticated version of the 12C. The 650S has carbon-ceramic brakes and got a power boost of 25 hp. Customers with a 12C won’t have to be disappointed, the 12C is still an amazing car. Especially when you update the systems of your 12C which means you get the software of the optimized active aerodynamics from the 650S.
